Hundreds detained in anti government protests to be released, including two young female detainees held in Cairo's Tahrir square, media reports said on Monday.

Security sources said around 200 people were detained on Friday night in the clashes in Cairo's Tahrir Square that quickly spread across the country.

They included around 90 women, some dressed in jeans and T-shirts, some in black.

There were also reports of hundreds of men, some wearing orange jumpsuits, detained on Friday night along a highway connecting the capital to the coastal city of Alexandria, while women were also detained there.

The protesters accused President Mohammed Morsi of allowing a military takeover and said they were seeking his reinstatement.

"We are here in solidarity with our brothers and sisters who have lost their lives, the security forces who have died and our people who are fighting for their rights. And we are here in their memory," activist Fathi El-Shalif told reporters.

"The Egyptian people demand that the government stand up and face justice. The police and military leadership must act according to the Constitution and respect the rights of all of us," Mr El-Shalif said, calling on protesters to rally in front of the Egyptian Embassy in Washington and outside the US consulate in Alexandria.

President Mohamed Morsi is the target of many of the most vicious attacks the demonstrators have hurled at him, and it will take at least two weeks before the army can clear the opposition-controlled square in front of Tahrir, a security source close to the country's interior ministry said on Sunday.

Mr Morsi, who is in power for two and a half years but is the unpopular head of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood movement, is fighting to survive a deepening power vacuum with a dwindling Islamist base.

Tahrir, which has attracted thousands of supporters since its creation more than two years ago, was the site of the bloodiest days of the anti-Morsi protests in 2012 when more than 100 police officers were killed in a clash with pro-government demonstrators.

A month later, more than 100 people were arrested for refusing to leave Tahrir for the day, after the military's army chief said the protest movement was not going to be "eliminated" and that police officers would remain in public.

A police official said around 100 people were detained when they were detained earlier in the day after refusing to leave the square for a period of three hours, the report said.
